Puberty and stretch marks

In the previous entries, we have discussed about the causes of stretch marks. One of the common causes of stretch marks is rapid growth during puberty. However, some of you might not really clear about this. Well in this entry I would like to share some info about puberty, rapid growth and how they caused stretch marks. Here is what I’ve read from websites.
“Puberty is the period of time when children begin to mature biologically, psychologically, socially and cognitively. Girls start to grow into women and boys into men. This time period is when a child's body takes on those characteristics that define it sexually.
For girls, puberty can begin between the ages of nine to fourteen. For boys, it will be around age ten to seventeen. The whole process can last from only one year to as many as six years.”

“It is normal for teenagers to get some stretch marks. The marks occur when a person grows or gains weight in a short period of time, such as during puberty. However, getting stretch mark does not necessarily mean a person is overweight. Thin people can get the marks too, especially when experiencing a rapid growth spurt. Most people think that only girls get stretch marks. Although it is more common in girls, boys can get stretch marks too, especially those who lift weights and gain a lot of weight.”

“As mentioned before this, stretch marks happen when the skin is pulled by rapid growth or stretching. Although the skin is usually fairly elastic, when it's overstretched, the normal production of collagen (the major protein that makes up the connective tissue in your skin) is disrupted. As a result, scars called stretch marks may form.”

So now you get the idea on how puberty and rapid growth can causes stretch marks.
